My review: My first impression of this is to run away and quickly.
I found the first few chapters hard to follow and to digest. The prose bounced from present to past tense and back again more often than not; I found the paragraphs to consist of lots of short sentences that could have been linked together with some punctuation.
I found the dialogue to be a bit confused – jumping from modern slang to eloquent English in the next sentence. The main female character and her best friend use the majority of the modern slang more often but then it jumps to what could be termed in certain circles – old world or less modern.
I have a dislike of romance novels where there is little to no build up towards the relationship and it just appears out of the ether and I found this to be another that will join the growing list. Within hours of ‘meeting’ Eaven and Talon have some sort of connection that neither of them understand or – I feel – want.
Understandably Talon has a sad past which is explained early on in the novel in brief detail and yes, that can explain some of his reluctance to get in a relationship of any sort with another woman but I still don’t understand how they can rush into things so quickly. The day of the morning after which was effectively a one night stand – liberally peppered with awkward emotional conflict and confusion, Talon manages to get Eaven’s address from her cousin. After one night.
Regardless of how close Talon and Luke (the cousin) are – it’s a bit suspect that he gives out her address to someone who is a total stranger to her; not to mention the fact that her best friend is also A. alright with letting a strange man into their house and B. encouraging sexual relations between her friend and this stranger despite knowing of some issues with Eaven’s past boyfriend.
He messes up, she freaks out, he apologises. Typical thing.
Moving on, the relationship develops more and quickly. The ex-girlfriend appears back on the scene and as is typical in this kind of story creates an issue that blows up in her face in attempting to break up Talon and Eaven. Her plan fails so she moves on to more drastic measures – attempted murder.
After only a couple of months Talon proposes, Eaven accepts.
This review is purely my opinion and with this one, my first impression to run away and quickly stayed with me throughout the story. I found it very hard to get on with; the dialogue, syntax, punctuation or lack there of, editing etc wasn’t as on par as it could have been. The plot was typical and one I’ve read many times in the past but this wasn’t one that I enjoyed overmuch.
While I can imagine In a Heartbeat (Rebel Walking, #1) being a good New Adult romance for the younger generation perhaps. It isn’t something that I enjoyed and will not be pursuing the remainder of the series.
